It’s amazing how much makeup that we hang on to for future styles we have in mind but never actually get around to creating. We don’t generally think about it but makeup really does have an expiration date, and we should be especially careful when dealing with what we put near our eyes and face.

Here are a few tips and estimates on how to know when makeup is expired:

Eyes

Pencil Eyeliner: because it is generally an oil based foundation, it can last longest of your makeup to up 2 years. Sharpen your eyeliner regularly to avoid unnecessary bacteria from previous uses.

Liquid Eyeliner: can be used up to 3 months.

Mascara: 3 months. With every use of your mascara wand it is pumping air into the tube and also you are transferring bacteria from your face back into the tube.

Lips

Lip-glosses/lipstick tubes: can be used for up to two years.

Lip Pencils: Up to 2 years. Just like pencil eyeliner, lip liners should be sharpened with every use

Lip balm pots: 12 months. Personally I've stopped using these, because usually I'm on the go and love to use lip balms that come in a twist up tubs. It's easy to apply without using my finger.

Face

Powdered foundations and Blushes: because of its non-liquid state, you can hang on to it for up to 2 years.

Cream Applications: these can be used for up 12 months; even if it is an oil-based solution. Unlike eyeliner sometimes we are in a rush and don’t have the time to look for an appropriate brush to blend it in, usually we would use our fingers to get the blending job done.

For a better lasting shelf life as I've mentioned above; instead of applying and blending make-up with your hands, use brushes and sponges to avoid the spread of bacteria from your hand into you makeup and on your face. Cosmetics should generally be stored in a cool dry place for best results.
